Not for the fainthearted, the mesa to the west of town is sliced by the dramatic Rio Grande Gorge. Closer to town just west of the village of El Prado is the Blueberry Hill area with gentle rolling hills and views of the mountains and mesa. As you go closer to the gorge, the land becomes more rugged and arid. With almost 300 days of sunshine and a lack of water, it has become an area for building alternative homes.
Across the Gorge and off the grid, here this wild and splendid landscape attracts some and scares others. Be prepared for muddy roads with sheep and cattle roaming free. Build an Earthship out of tires or a stawbale home, this is the area for the unconventional.
